🌿 Rain Shadow Bonsai Club Newsletter
October 2025 Edition
🍁 A Note from the Club
As the leaves begin to turn and the high desert air grows crisp, we’re reminded of the quiet beauty of seasonal change—something every bonsai artist learns to appreciate. October has been a month of reflection, growth, and connection. Whether you joined us on the trail or in the workshop, thank you for being part of this thriving community.
📸 Field Trip Recap: Suiseki Stone Hunt
On October 5th, a group of 14 members ventured out to the Truckee River for our annual Suiseki Stone Hunt. With gloves, buckets, and a keen eye for natural beauty, we explored the riverbanks in search of viewing stones. The weather was perfect, the company even better, and several members found stones worthy of display. Special thanks to Carol for sharing her knowledge on stone classification and to Leslie for organizing carpools and snacks!
“It was my first suiseki outing, and I’m hooked. I never thought a rock could tell a story until now.” — Mark T., new member
🌱 Upcoming Class: Winter Prep for Bonsai
Saturday, November 2 @ 10 AM – Sparks Library
As temperatures drop, it’s time to prepare your trees for dormancy. This hands-on session will cover:
- Cold-hardy species care
- Protecting roots from frost
- Indoor vs. outdoor overwintering
- Q&A with experienced members
Bring your questions—and your tree if you’d like a quick health check!
🌟 Member Spotlight: Carol’s First Bonsai Year
This month, we’re celebrating Carol, who joined the club last fall and has since become a vibrant part of our community. From her first juniper to leading a suiseki demo, Carol’s journey is a testament to the power of patience, curiosity, and community.
“Bonsai gave me something to nurture—and in return, it helped me grow.”
We’re so proud of your progress, Carol!
🍂 Seasonal Tip: Autumn Tasks for Healthy Trees
- Reduce watering as growth slows, but don’t let roots dry out.
- Remove wire if it’s starting to bite into bark.
- Clean up fallen leaves to prevent pests and mold.
- Start planning winter protection—especially for potted trees exposed to wind.
